Authorship

  Authorship   Authorship refers to the originator of the work or artistic concept. It allows the artist to assert ownership and copyright over their art. Usually it’s beneficial for an artist to claim authorship, but there have been instances where artists have denied authorship of works that have been proven to be theirs. For example, Lucien Freud.   Freud denied authorship of his early work, “The man in the Black Cravat” which was verified as his in a BBC investigation. His rejection of the work allegedly resulted from a falling out with its owner. Many theories exist, for example, he wanted to increase the rarity value of his other works, he fell out with the owner, or because he wanted to disassociate himself from his earlier works. Lucian Freud "Man in a Black Cravat" Banksy is a unique example of authorship. Once verified by Banksy, everyone knows it has been done by him, except no one knows who Banksy is. Art Vs Design What is art?   Art is the expression or application of creative skill and imagination and is usually visual in nature. It is produced mainly for its beauty and emotional impact and does not need to have a purpose. Art is naturally inclusive because anything can be seen as art.     What is design? A design gives an object or space a significance and/or a purpose. The purpose of design is to create solutions for people, systems, or physical items. It’s practical and doesn’t rely on aesthetics and it puts the users’ needs before their desires.     Art vs Design Designers work with briefs and the final product must perform a function, whereas artists have more creative freedom, and their product just has to exist, it doesn’t need to have a purpose. This forces design to be more rational and methodical because it has a specific end goal, but art is all on the artists instinct and perceptions.   Both art and design however share the same fundamentals (line, shape, colour, textu
