Art Vs Design

Art Vs Design

What is art?

Art is the expression or application of creative skill and imagination and is usually visual in nature. It is produced mainly for its beauty and emotional impact and does not need to have a purpose. Art is naturally inclusive because anything can be seen as art.

What is design?

A design gives an object or space a significance and/or a purpose. The purpose of design is to create solutions for people, systems, or physical items. It’s practical and doesn’t rely on aesthetics and it puts the users’ needs before their desires.

Art vs Design

Designers work with briefs and the final product must perform a function, whereas artists have more creative freedom, and their product just has to exist, it doesn’t need to have a purpose. This forces design to be more rational and methodical because it has a specific end goal, but art is all on the artists instinct and perceptions.

Both art and design however share the same fundamentals (line, shape, colour, texture and space). They both need to be visually attractive in order to capture the viewers attention or make a space inviting and interesting. They both also have the ability to tell a story.

Examples

This would be an example of Art. It has been created by the artist for the purpose of looking nice, filling a space, and letting them explore their creativity.

This would be an example of design. The designer has used multiple pieces of art and arranged them on the walls to complement the positioning of the objects around them. The positioning of the plants also has been done to create a nice busy atmosphere, but not too much as to block the tables and chairs from serving their purpose.
